Henning Schliephake is a full Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Georg-August Universität in Göttingen, Germany.
He obtained his dental degree in 1985 and completed his doctoral thesis in dentistry in 1988 from the Medical University of Hannover, Germany. He further obtained a medical degree in 1989 and completed his doctoral thesis in medicine in 1990. In 1995, he gained a PhD degree (Habilitation) in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Professor Schliephake started his training in Oral Surgery at the Department of Plastic Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Henriettenstiftung Hannover, from 1985 to 1987. He then completed training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical University of Hannover from 1989 to 1996. In 1995, he was appointed as Associate Professor at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery before obtaining Full professorship in 2001.
His area of research focuses on reconstructive surgery, tissue engineering, growth factors, biomaterials, dental implants, QoL in head and neck oncology. He is currently studying surface engineering of dental implants and forbioactive polymer implants for jaw reconstruction with a research grant from the Ministry of Science and Education (2009-2011). Prof. Schliephake obtained several other grants for scientific research: the first one for his scientific work for his PhD degree from the German National Science Foundation, then a research grant for experimental studies on bone regeneration and growth factors (1993-1996), followed by one from the Ministry of Science and Education for research on biofunctional implant coating (2000-2003) and one from the German National Science Foundation for experimental studies on tissue engineering of bone and osteogenic growth factors (1999-2005).
From 2004 to 2006, Professor Schliephake was President of the German Association for Oral Implantology (DGI), member of the Board of the German Society of Dental Oral and Craniomandibular Sciences (DGZMK), and spokesman of the Surgical Section of the VHZMK (Verein der Hochschullehrer der Zahn , Mund under Kieferheilkunde). Since 2007, he is President elect of DGZMK and President of the Oral Surgery Group of the German Society of Dental Oral Craniomandibular Sciences (AGKi) since 2009. He also was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) from 2005 to 2009.
Prof. Schliephake is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (IJOMS) since 1996, and an editorial reviewer in the ‘Research and Development’ section since 2000. In 2004, he became an associate editor of IJOMS and editor of the Reconstructive Surgery section.
He held similar positions in various other publications. In 2001, he became editor of the Implantologie Journal until 2003. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Deutsche Zahnärtzliche Zeitschrift and of the Zeitschrift Mund-Kiefer-Gesichtschirugie since 2002. In 2005, he became a member of the International Editorial advisory Board of the Asian Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (AJOMS). He was editor-in-chief of the Journal of Dental Implantology from 2007 to 2010. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of Oral Oncology since 2007.
He contributed too many publications in peer-reviewed journals and books.
Prof. Schliephake has received several recognitions during his career. He received a first award for the best doctoral thesis in medicine of the Medical University of Hannover in 1990. Then he obtained many awards for the best scientific paper at various events: the 34th Meeting of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Kieferchirurgie (Association for Maxillofacial Surgery) in 1992 the 45th Congress of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Mund-, Kiefer- and Gesichtchirurgie (German Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) in 1995 Spring meeting of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Implantologie (German Society of Oral Implantology) in 1996 the 47th Meeting of the Oral Surgery Group of DGZMK, the German Society of Dental Oral and Craniomandilbular Sciences in 2005 the 15th Congress of the European Association of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery in 2000 the 49th Meeting of the Oral Surgery Group of AGKi, the German Society of Dental Oral and Craniomandibular Sciences in 2007.
And he received the Martin Wassmund prize from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Mund-, Kiefer- und Gesichtchirugie in 1996.
