In this special edition of the EAO’s "Just Ask" series, Garrett Heikope hosted two experts, Professor Nikos Donos and Professor Asbjørn Jokstad, to discuss the key findings from the EAO Consensus Conference 2021, which addressed important topics in implant dentistry.
The first segment focused on the timing of dental implant placement and loading. Professor Donos, who chaired the first working group, shared insights from the consensus on how implant timing impacts biological outcomes and survival rates. The group's systematic review found that the timing of implant loading (immediate, early, or delayed) had no significant effect on implant survival rates when following delayed placement. He stressed the importance of clinical judgment in selecting the appropriate treatment protocol, as factors like patient-specific conditions and anatomical features should guide decisions. The review also revealed that immediate loading can be used for single implants without compromising aesthetic outcomes in the short to medium term.
The second part of the session focused on digital tools in prosthodontics, presented by Professor Jokstad. His group’s work, exploring the use of digital workflows in implant prosthodontics, highlighted key findings on fabrication methods and patient outcomes. The consensus noted that while both monolithic and veneered ceramic crowns perform well, monolithic crowns are preferred in non-functional areas due to their reduced risk of chipping. Moreover, the panel emphasized the need for clinicians to stay updated on the latest digital tools and manufacturing methods. Jokstad also discussed the challenges in comparing digital and conventional methods, stressing that the quality of research in this area must improve, especially in patient-reported outcomes and the cost-effectiveness of digital workflows.
The session provided valuable clinical recommendations and underscored the ongoing need for high-quality research to better understand the impact of these emerging technologies on patient care. As the field of implant dentistry evolves, both experts agreed that digital tools, when properly integrated, can enhance precision, minimize invasiveness, and ultimately improve patient satisfaction.
